Japanese Swords – Only the Best

6 April, 2009 (12:43) | Japanese swords | By: admin

Swords have played a major role in the history of Japan, mostly due to the long reign of the Samurai warriors that dominated more than a thousand years of the country’s history. During these times, forges developed claying methods to produce the best blades possible and these techniques are used even today and that is why Japanese swords are still among the best that there are. There are Japanese swords made to be put on display, but yet others are handmade by sword smiths that know how to put together a fully functional, beautiful and valuable sword.

Fully functional and battle ready Japanese swords are popular among sword enthusiasts and collectors, as well as martial artists who use these swords in their forms and disciplines. These balanced, sharp and strong swords are perfect for using in demonstrations and even meet the standards to be used in competitions, such as those that involve swords fighting like in kung fu, tai chi, jiu jitsu or ninjutsu. Demonstrations for the martial arts are another area where Japanese swords are often put to use, because they are excellent for cutting through objects such as bamboo or rice mats and also for someone to show off sword techniques with since these swords are lightweight and in no way reduce flexibility or speed.

Japanese swords also make great collector items, because they can be added to a variety of collections like historical ones where they can represent the Samurai era or just as another type of bladed weapon. There are a few different kinds of Japanese swords and they can easily be distinguished from one another, but together they make an impressive collection. The most famous and popular sword of Japan is the katana, which is a very effective, elegant and useful weapon. However, there is also the tanto which is a short sword, wakizashi which is a medium sized sword and extra large swords like the jin tachi.

Today’s Japanese swords are still known for their quality. The blades of the battle ready swords are made of high carbon steels and the handle is almost always wrapped in real leather or fine silk. Display swords use stainless steel for the blades, but even that is a high quality material that will retain its looks for a long time to come.

Eye-Catching Scottish Swords

31 March, 2009 (11:47) | Sword Collecting | By: admin

Considering the long history of Scotland and just how many battles took place there during the Middle Ages, it is no wonder that there are many Scottish swords. There is a wide range of Scottish swords available and whereas some are very elaborate and are meant to be showpieces, others are basic and designed only to be effective. Since there are so many kinds of Scottish swords on the market, they are a lot of fun to collect and put on display. However, those wanting battle ready blades will also find that there are many fully functional Scottish swords to choose from.

For collectors it is a must to own a Scottish basket hilt sword, since these are quite eye-catching and stand out from other bladed weapons. There is no missing the incredibly elaborate, and sometimes colorful, hilt since it is unique and intricately made.  Of course this basket hilt also served as a means of protecting the holder’s hand and therefore it is easy enough to find such swords in battle ready versions. Some are even replicas of historical swords and so they are suitable for battle reenactments and demonstrations.

On top of the exquisitely detailed basket hilt or military swords, there are also a number of long swords, broadswords, short swords and daggers. There is, for example, a replica of William Wallace’s sword or the Scottish Dirk and both of them are popular items among sword enthusiasts and are great as collectibles or props to be used, but also as swords to practice or train with. When it comes to replicas, however, it is also of importance that the Scottish swords are copies of the original and in the best case also a limited edition or come with a certificate of authenticity or license.

There are many well known and reliable companies that make Scottish swords. The battle ready versions are forged of high carbon steels and the display-only swords have blades made of stainless steel. Among the most reliable makers of Scottish swords include Hanwei by Paul Chen and Cold Steel. Regardless of the reasons for owning a Scottish sword, they are both great weapons and pieces to put on display or add to a collection as long as you pay attention to the details and ensure that you purchase the right sword from the start.

Variations of Samurai Swords

10 March, 2009 (12:35) | Japanese swords | By: admin

Samurai swords used to be weapons of warfare, but now are used as collector’s items and swords for martial artists to use during demonstrations and competitions. The renowned high quality has in no way been lost and even today all the makers of Samurai swords pay attention to detail, materials and claying methods in order to make pieces. Even replicas of swords that are for display only are well made and have a realistic look, even though they cannot be used as real sword would be. Finding Samurai swords to purchase is not difficult as it is often a category of its own on many online stores that sell weapons or swords.

The katana is the long Samurai sword and is very well known around the world. However, there is also the wakizashi which is a medium sized sword and the tanto which is a short sword. Many Samurai swords are sold in sets with all three sizes and put on a rack, which makes a great item for any collection or to be put on display by martial arts or sword enthusiasts.  Those interested in the history of Japan should also add some Samurai swords to their collection since these weapons were used extensively for more than a thousand years and the Samurai were a major class of the country during those centuries. Samurai swords were also a major part of many martial arts disciplines that originated in Japan, such as Kendo, Aikido or Jiu Jitsu. All of these disciplines today require knowledge and skill of handling swords in order to advance in the black belt rankings.

Since Samurai swords are light, strong and balanced they are also perfect to train with, even for beginners since they in now way are cumbersome to hold and don’t take away flexibility or speed. If you want to use the sword for training or any other physical purpose, then the piece must specifically be battle ready or fully functional. This is important because the blade is made of high carbon steels and not stainless steel, which breaks easily upon impact. This can cause injury and results in the loss of a good display sword.

Military Swords From Around the World

27 February, 2009 (14:00) | Sword Collecting | By: admin

There is a wide variety of military swords on the market, because of the many different armies that once used swords. There are ancient swords from the Romans to swords from the Middle Ages and even sabers and other cavalry weapons and civil war swords that date back only to the mid 1800s. Not only have military swords varied with the times, but they also differ according to country and region. There are, for example, military swords from the United States, Japan, China, England and Germany, to mention only a few regions or countries.

Since military swords are closely connected to history, they are for the most part replicas. This means that they are based on real historical models that can be seen in museums or collections and that they are not battle ready. Not being battle ready basically means that the sword is a display piece and not a fully functional sword that can withstand being used for battles or cutting things. Usually the blade is made of stainless steel and the handle is wrapped with leather or other similar materials.

Any serious collector should be careful when choosing military swords to add to their collection if they want something of valuable or which will one day be a collector’s item. In order for a sword to fulfill these criteria, they must be limited editions from manufacturers that have a license to reproduce the model in question, be an exact copy of a real historical sword and come with a certificate of authenticity. The best replicas of military swords will also be most limited in production, which means that only a certain number will be made. The lower the number of swords made, the better the chances are for a collector to have a valuable item.

Some companies are better than others when it comes to making and handcrafting military swords. Two of the most reliable companies that offer military swords are WKC and Cold Steel, both of which have high quality and many details on their weapons. Regardless of the manufacturer, military swords are perfect as displays, as part of collections and as props for battle reenactments or gatherings for enthusiasts of a particular era or region.

Enter the Fascinating World of Ninjutsu and Ninja Weapons

18 February, 2009 (15:32) | Japanese swords | By: admin

The ninjas have always been fascinating figures right from the start and their discipline of ninjutsu actually means the art of stealth when translated from the Japanese language. That is an accurate description for the ninja and what has given them a sense of mystery. However, ninja weapons are also fascinating for many reasons. First of all, there are many different kinds of ninja weapons and secondly, they differ from what the normal perception of a weapon is. Nunchuks, throwing stars and shuriken are also famous ninja weapons. The throwing weapons were not used to cause bodily harm, but meant as distractions or a way of poisoning an opponent. Just like the mysterious ninja, the ninja weapons are just as specialized, concealable and creative.

There is virtually no end as to what could be used as a ninja weapon.  Many used a form of a bomb, known as metsubushi, which was basically something filled with something like sand in order to block the vision of an opponent and temporarily blind them. There are groups of ninjas with their own disciplines that even have recipes for landmines and gunpowder mixtures for all sorts of purposes. Another not so obvious weapon used by the ninja is a ring. Of course upon closer inspection the ring has a sharp point which is a very effective weapon if you understand the pressure points of the human body, since they can actually cause short-lived bouts with paralysis.

One of the main categories of ninja weapons, however, is something more obvious and well known and that is the ninja sword. There were three different sizes of swords used by ninjas that can be broken down into three categories – the wakizashi, ninjato and katana. Since ninjas were often spies, assassins and thieves, they also had a shikoroken which is a sword that has saw teeth on one edge. This was great not only as a weapon, but also for a way of breaking into places. When buying one of these swords it is important the length be right for the type, that it is lightweight and has a high carbon steel blade and have a sheath and handle with black coloring. The wrapping needs to be done either with silk or leather, because other materials are hard to keep a good grip on and unwrap more easily.

Rambo Knives and Their Increasing Popularity

13 February, 2009 (15:04) | Movie Swords | By: admin

Rambo knives are famous around the world because of the Rambo movies. Each movie had its own uniquely designed knife that was used by Rambo himself, but the knives are now much more than just collectible items. They are also referred to as survival knives and are now a standard piece of equipment taken along with people when out camping, hiking, fishing or hunting.

In total there have been four Rambo movies and each one has an officially licensed Rambo Knife. Each is unique in many ways, ranging from the blade length, handle and shape of the knife. The collector’s editions will always need an official license and anything else is just a copy. In some cases you will find limited signature editions which will one day be even more valuable. Since each knife is different from the other ones, it is best to have all four of them.

Generally speaking, the official Rambo knives are not the cheapest to buy, but they do offer you a lot in terms of quality. The blades are made of high carbon steel or stainless steel, have sheaths made of genuine leather and grips that are made with good materials. The first two Rambo knives also have a survival kit built into the knife. This is what really started the trend towards survival knives that are now used on a daily basis around the world. The Rambo Knife I and II have a compass mounted into the pommel itself and a grip that is hollow on the inside to provide room for the survival kit. The blades itself have screwdriver head points integrated into the design and so can be used for that too.

Many brand name sword and knife manufacturers produce Rambo knives so you will have enough to compare. However, good knives can also be dangerous and so you should also invest in the display cases or have them at least mounted where other people do not easily have access to them. Although the replica Rambo knives are fully functional, they are better off put on display so they will not be damaged.

Versatility of Samurai Swords

9 February, 2009 (14:16) | Japanese swords | By: admin

Samurai swords are among the most well known and are famous around the world. These swords, also known as katanas or wakizashis, are important in many kinds of martial arts regardless of where the discipline originated. A Samurai sword, however, may also be a collectible item if it is handcrafted or based on real historical model of a famous Samurai or one that is on display in a museum.

The Samurai were the Japanese military before industrialization came to Japan and over the centuries they perfected their sword forging techniques. Today these techniques are still used and it is evident in the quality that Samurai swords have since the blades are made with claying techniques to make them strong, the handle wrappings are perfectly done and provide the best possible grip and the entire sword is balanced. Although people no longer need swords to fight wars, they are still a major part of many martial arts forms that originated in Japan.

Especially those that train in Kendo, Kenjutsu, Jiu Jitsu and Aikido should purchase Samurai swords. There are long and short versions and so in order to advance in the martial arts disciplines it is necessary to train will both kinds of Samurai swords. On top of having high quality swords for training, if you participate in competitions or martial arts display shows then you will also need competition Samurai swords. These have battle ready blades and are made with various types of high carbon steel. A good example would be Iaito Training swords.

The Samurai play a major role in Japan’s history and so fans of that time period and collectors of historical Japanese items should also purchase handcrafted Samurai swords. They are easily displayed on special racks and make a great decoration or can complete a weapon or Samurai collection. Many Samurai enthusiasts also take part in reenactments of the time period and in order to make this realistic it is necessary to have a Samurai sword. For battle reenactments you need to purchase a battle ready Samurai sword since it is less prone to breaking and will not easily be damaged when it hits another weapon.

Stainless Steel Swords - Do You Need to Clean them?

3 February, 2009 (18:14) | Sword Collecting | By: admin

It is well known in the sword collecting area that if you purchase real sword made of High carbon steel blades that you will need to take really good care of them in order to keep them intact, but does the same rules apply for Stainless steel swords?

Stainless steel is a combination of carbon steel with an addition of chromium and nickel. the results is a wide range of stainless steels. the difference of this type of allow compared to simple high carbon steel swords is that first, they are not battle -ready but they are much more resistant to corrosion. The reason is simply because the resulting allow is a much less reactive metal.

You will very often see display swords for sale that are made of 420 and 440 stainless steel. While many believe these alloys to be invulnerable to corrosion, this is not the truth. Of course they require a lot less maintenance than battle-ready swords but you still need to be careful because the evidence of corrosion does not show itself as quickly as it does on carbon steel.

The good news is that in the event  that your stainless steel swords do rust a little, it can be easily polished away and restored to its original shine. To make sure you do not have to polish the rust away from your stainless steel swords, i do highly recommend to do a little maintenance from time to time.

Remember, even though these types of swords are very resistant to rust, prevention is always better than restoration.
